The enclosed universal joints have significant grease leaks. Are parts & packing available? Fort Wayne Clutch & Driveline can replace the entire driveshaft using modern joints. Any recommendations?

    Dave,

When they STOP leaking you’ve got trouble!

All kidding aside, make sure that you have all of the pieces to the Spicer joints. The primary source of leakage is between the large outer housing and the end cap which has a cork seal on the underside. With a good spring and a fresh band of cork you can get a pretty good seal. The cork also polishes the surface of the outer cover. If the cover has gotten rusty over time then the rust must be polished off (not using the cork) so that you don’t get premature wear on the cork.

I don’t see the need to have a new drive shaft and joints made. They are rather simple to rebuild. I have hade no significant problem with grease leaks. Certainly not enough to warrant a complete new unit. i don’t recall having trouble getting any parts needed. The last one I rebuilt was in 1995.
