Got my daily e-mail from BAT (Bring A Trailer.com), a very cool site for offbeat cars, and today one of the features is the supposed 1931 Pierce Arrow land speed record seeking car that showed up on American Pickers a few years ago. BAT comments are as skeptical and confused as those on our site were when this thing first surfaced. Here’s a copy and paste link: http://bringatrailer.com/2013/12/23/1931-pierce-arrow-land-speed-record-car/

Make a heck of a stocking stuffer, wouldn’t it?

    Merry Christmas everyone!

This car was the subject of a >4-month long thread on the AACA forums. The current owner started the thread.

Ed Minnie, David Coco, and I commented at various points in the thread.

The consensus seems to be that it is a late 1931 Model 43 engine and 137″ wb chassis. Has the original Pierce diff, not suitable for Land Speed Record runs. :-) I think it’s a post-war backyard build, especially with the WW2 aircraft gauges used.

I was given the location of the car two months before this guy bought it. It was about 5 blocks away from Dave Harris’s home in Florida. I determined it had no value from just watching the tv show several times. I didn’t even have any parts worth chasing. Current owner is dreaming it’s something it is not. He even posted it was similar to a real 1933 Custom Silver Arrow. I think it was a movie prop or back yard dream project at best. Mike Wolf wouldn’t pass up anything he could make a few bucks on. Thats why it was left to rot by a picker who knew what he was doing.

The current owner has been searching and searching for any documentation on this thing, and apparently has found nothing.

I believe the fact that there seems to be NO documentation speaks volumes. If this thing had been run at speed anywhere, there’d be pictures or articles, something to document it….I think as Ed does, it was a garage project that eventually ended up outside, and probably never moved an inch under it’s own power.

Sure is interesting what’s out there, though…..it’s a big country, and new things turn up every day…..
