So the starter in my series 33 has been very unreliable, and feeling weak. So I disassembled it doing routine cleaning and inspecting. The primary problem I think I am having is that at some point in the distant past somebody had swapped out the brushes with some that were definetly not intended for this starter, so they are not making good contact with the commutator. does anybody have a suggestion on replacement brushes?

Try Neal at Obsolete Parts and Equipment. He is in the parts and services section.

this may be too late to help but there is a series 33 starter on ebay that is due to close in 8 hours. it is item number 331098188521

I was planning on calling Neal today. And have had that starter on my watch list. Probably will buy it and hope it has good parts at least.

So, I talked to Neal, and he pointed me in the direction of Uncle Glenn at Ace Alternator and Starter in Wichita. He normally does not sell parts but, was gracious enough to sell me the last 4 NOS brushes he had!!! Also, I purchased the starter off of ebay that George referred to, so will be rebuilding it as a back up.

Yes John, got the new brushes installed, did a short “run in” on them, and starter works great!
