anybody have a recommendation on where to get a motometer restored?
What do you need to do to it?
Re-plate it, tough to do.
New thermometer? Tougher!
Advise as to the problem and maybe we can help.
Also specify the size (Universal (3″) or Standard / DeLuxe (3.5″).
Often the best thing to do is hang out on EBAY for MONTHS and look for good one at auction.
That stated, good ones are now more difficult to find.
Peter,
I have the motometer on my series 33, which I would agree would be easiest to hang on eBay and locate a nice one. But I have a friend that has one that is a Marmon specific, actually says Marmon inside the glass area. And it needs playing and thermometer.
Contact Bruce Abbott at Abbott Instruments, 10860 S.W. 74th, Portland, OR 97223. Telno: 503-246-1287.
The name plate inside the motometer is exchangeable with other motometers of the same size. There were Pierce name plates available a few years ago for the large motometer.
So your friend could buy a nice motometer of generic ‘pedigree’ and carefully remove the screws retaining the glass and swap the name plate..
This is one reason I’d be very careful about buying a motometer claiming to be an original for a specific Marque.
Greg L.
Thank you Paul and Greg. Will look into and recommend accordingly.
I agree with Greg. I bought one for my 14 Caddy from a off brand, installed a new Crest. Presto, Cadillac motomeeter for cheap.
Hope you have about a year to wait. I contacted Abbott for my gauges and was told a year minimum. That just seems a little too long for me
The good craftsmen are usually very busy. However, if you want it right you get in line.
If you go on EBAY, be patient and as Greg and others say, the plate is interchangeable.
If the size is a De Luxe, the new ones from Resto Supply are about the same OD (3.5″) but thinner and if nothing else, it will get you through while you hunt on EBAY for an original.
The Resto MOTOMETERS are chrome but the thermometer unscrews, so it could go to nickel easily. Then all you have to do is put in the correct nameplate.
I have one of those Resto jobs and now I NEVER use it because I now have a collection of original Universals and one SUPER-DUPER De Luxe.
The SIZE you want is the biggest issue in finding an excellent piece.
Oh, I forgot to say, you should consult an experienced Moto-Meter EBAY buyer (I am available) as you ned to know that the piece WORKS before you buy a nice looking clunker (experience).
If you want to know the trick, be in touch via telephone.
Some sellers say that they did not test the piece, HA! Likely does’t work or else they don’t know how to boil water!
Peter, maybe they don’t have the recipe to make boiled water.
There is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL MotoMeter Standard on EBAY, eBay item number:231085663906.
It is expensive, but it is out of sight!
another possibility is capaldi enterprises here in Cleveland. they have a gauge repair specialist named “john””. does very good work. they are classic restoration guys. 440-951-4120. there is also a plating company about a mile away from them that does nickel.”
Thank you for all the help.
