Hi,
I have all four of these caps, but one is pretty messed up. Does anyone have one for sale?
Thanks, Rick
Hi Rick, these grease caps show up often on ebay. They are for 1929 wood spoke wheels only.
I’m curious: did your car come with a set of Pierce tools ?? If so, did you get the very big open-end
hubcab or grease cap wrench needed to get these caps off and on without resorting to a large pair
of channel-lock pliers ??
Greg Long
My car had four of these caps ON it, plus there were 7, yes seven of the more plain smaller caps. Some one must have thought they looked cool, even though no one would be able to see them with the wires if not original to the car.
p.s. There were a few random tools in the box of stuff that came with the car. one screw driver, spark P whrench, allen wrenches and small adjustable wrench. Plus a nickle plated tire guage shaped like a cigar. Im slowly trying to find the other stuff.
Rick,
Is your screwdriver, spark plug wrench and small adjustable all Pierce script tools? The tire gauge wasn’t part of the official toolkit (if I recall), but a Pierce script Schrader (cigar type) or U.S. Gauge (round face) tire gauge are fun pieces to have. Can you tell I think so??
John,
Yes, the screw driver, wrenches have peirce script. I also have a 15′ plumbers wrench with pierce on it.
the cigar type guage is at the restoration shop but I do have a pic of the other guage. It is in great shape.
Rick
Rick,
You better hide that beautiful gauge from me when we meet. If you ever find two ugly old gauges in place of your nice one, you will know what happened…
Rick,
I am a bit confused…
Are the smaller plain caps that you mention steel, with no Pierce script and a hex nut type end? Those would be correct for your car given that you have wire wheels.
Per Greg’s point, I think that Pierce intended you to use your 11″ large adjustable wrench to remove the the steel caps I have described, but NEVER on the wood wheel type decorative caps like you have pictured above. Pierce had a nice hubcap tool that came in the toolkit for wood wheel equipped cars.
Yup, I have 7 of the smaller hex shaped end caps. They were orignaly painted black. There is remnents of orignal paint on all 7.
My large wrench is 15′ closed. Is this a rare size. i have seen a few 11′ sell on ebay. My 15′ is the only one I hacve seen in my short period of experience.
Im small wrench rich!

Rick,
My understanding is that the 15″ was originally for Pierce Trucks and the 11″” was for cars.
“
john,
How much are the fancy grease cap worth? Aprox?
Thanks, Rick
Rick,
I would like other members to chime in since I don’t have a 29, but I would think that one that doesn’t have dents, but needs plating should be in the $75 to $100 range. I am sorry to say that they won’t fund the restoration of a 29 Pierce-Arrow DC!
Have you bought new wire wheel hubcaps for your car? If not, contact Dave Murray. Dave usually puts new skins on the owner’s bases/cores, but he might have some bases in his possession that will sell. If not, some other members can help you with the bases/cores. The key thing with the cores is that the three “locking pins/balls”” that hold the hubcap on the wheel are still there.”
I have all the hex caps that are threaded and screw on. I also have 9 nice solid hub caps. Appear to be made out of brass. None of them are pitted. They all need to be chromed.
