Jerry,
I think, because of the need to reinstall the piston and the inability to compress the rings, your question is moot.
Bill
Many cars such as Stutz and Auburn have a bore that flares at the bottom so that pistons and rings can be installed from the bottom without removing the crank so Jerry’s question is valid.
Steve
No, don’t think so, the head has to be removed…..
David,
Are you speaking of Pierce specifically? I have replaced rings on a Stutz without removing the head or the crank.
Steve
For the Pierce 8, there is not enough room for the piston to come past the crankshaft. So the head has to be removed to remove a piston/connecting rod assembly.
Anytime the head is off, the valves should at least be inspected, probably lapped or if it has old, non-Stainless Steel exhaust valves, put in SS exhausts.
A properly done valve job makes a very significant difference in engine performance. And the Hydraulic Lifter Pierce engines need the valve springs set up properly as well.

Yes, I was talking of Pierce specifically.
