I have a round mirror that has fallen off of the stem support. Is there any way to re-attach? If it cant be re-attached, do you know where you can buy replacements? The mirror is tire mounted.

    Edward,

Could you post a pic of the problem?

It will help before anyone can make a reasoned recommendation.

Yes, I will take a picture after I get home from work and post it. What has happened is the round mirror which is mounted in the steel has come off the steel stem arm. It looks like the mirror is pressed into the steel stem arm. There is a small node on the back of the mirror assembly that presses into a hole in the stem arm assembly….anyway, I will post a picture tonight.

    Edward,

Does the back end of the mirror stanton come off to get access to the stud?

If so, you might want to take it off and see if you can remove the stud to have it sort welded on to the mirror to reinsert it.

if not, you may be stuck with using JB Weld to reattach it (does it already have glue on it – it looks like there is something like that on the faces shown in the pictures).

However, with that solution you may lose your ability to adjust the angle of the mirror unless it adjusts by moving the stanton itself.

A third option is to take it to a restorer or a machine shop to see what they can do with it.

    Good luck on that.

    Edward,

It looks like the mirror head was held on by a semi rectangular boss coming off the stem. The boss was placed in the corresponding hole in the mirror head and staked from the inside? Evidently, the head pulled off the boss, Is that correct?

Can you tell if the mirror glass is crimped to the head or just glued.

If glued, then if you can get the glass off you should have access to the mounting point and either restake it or make a larger plate the same shape as the boss, drill and tap the stem, if possible, and screw the head back on with the larger shaped washer and replace the glass, hopefully without having to get new glass.

I am making assumptions here and you know what happens when you ass u me.

    Edward,

Here is an eBay listing. Maybe the mirrors are the same, but….!

Also, i like Bill Lyons’ input.

    Good luck.

On page 56 and 57 of Restoration Supply Company’s catalog you may find a mirror that will mount to your base or act as a complete replacement.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I will see if I can make any of them work!

I was able to get the glass mirror removed from its frame. Gently pressing thru stake hole in back of mirror and around edges on front of mirror frame. As suggested, I drilled and put a screw into the mirror frame to the stem. I chose to not just stake it back together as it had originally been made. Now have to glue mirror to frame.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

    Ed,

Great news. If you can get some urethane windshield adhesive, that would be the ticket to glue the glass back in.

    Good luck.
