Just to add to the pile of obscure information, I am in the process of sourcing a head gasket for the 836. Egge and Olson list the same gasket for a 28-32 Studebaker President 8 as for the 836.

I was able to find a NOS Victor Gasket, replete with asbestos, for the Studebaker and found that it is not the same as the PA gasket. PA is Victor 817 and the Studebaker was Victor 888, I was told.

Evidentially, the PA head has oval water ports and the Studebaker has round ones. Over time they just started substituting the PA oval port gaskets for the smaller round port heads.

That being said, the moral of the story is don’t assume current application guides apply to NOS parts.

Hi Bill, I’m sure you’re aware the Stude President and PA both had 9 main bearing engines. Stude also had a smaller 5 main bearing 8 engine. I wonder if the part # mix up is related to that.

    John,

I double checked and it is for a 3 1/2″ bore engine, which is the 337 CID, 9 bearing engine. The other engine is a 313 CID 5 main that is a 3 3/8″ bore. It appears to be a ’28 only engine, but I don’t know much about Studes except the factory for the post Avanti II, Avanti’s was across the street from my office in Youngstown, OH. Loved to watch them outside my window.
