Does anyone have a picture of the 3 gal. fuel reserve switch located above the fuel cap on a model 81? Thanks.

    David,

I do not believe that there is a 3-gallon reserve toggle on the fuel gauge on a Series 81, although I may be wrong.

On the Series 80, there is a toggle showing through the middle of the gas tank shroud.

The LEFT position is the RUN position.

The CENTER Position is OFF – NO Fuel (A Nasty way to fool with some other Series 80 Guy).

    The RIGHT position is Reserve.

Do not run on Reserve, as you may need the 3-gallons sometime.

Do NOT put it in the Center position, as you will likely forget and wonder why the heck your car will not start.

I attach a photo of a dusty toggle for your review.

    Peter,

To clarify is the picture you are showing in the Left Position?

    Ken,

The photo was taken from the rear of the car, so the toggle is turned to the RIGHT / RESERVE position.

    Peter,

Thank you for clearing it up. That may be part of the reason mine would not start. I had filled the tank but it must not of filled the Reserve Tank.

I will switch mine so it is opposite of yours. How does the Reserve Tank get

    filled?

    Thanks,

There is no moveable baffle, there is a soldered-in divider. The central fuel supply/reserve valve has two suction tubes, one on each side of the divider. Each tube ends just above the drain plugs in the bottom of the tank,

When one side of the tank runs dry, the lever is switched to pull the fuel from the other half of the tank.

In 1926, the fuel guage, the supply/reserve valve and the gas filler cap were all combined into one unit on the right side of the tank. The supply/reserve tube will only pull fuel from the tank down to about 3-4inches from the bottom. When the valve is switched to ‘reserve’, the suction tube than can pull from the bottom of the tank. So the bottom 3-4″ of fuel in the tank is the ‘reserve’ supply. it is not a separate tank or quantity of fuel.

    Greg,

    Thanks for the info.

I have never been inside the fuel tank of a Series 80.

Now I understand why there are two drain plugs at the bottom of the tank AND a suction tube showing in each of the drain plug holes.

There is a baffle, but as you point out, it is not a movable baffle, it is just that one of the fuel feed tubes is on the left side of the baffle and the other on the right side.
