After every drive with my ’32 the garage would smell like raw fuel for a few days, the bottom of the Stromberg UUR-2 would be a bit wet. The gas was weeping from the fiber washers on the main jets. Upon inspection I found out that the bowl area was pitted where the jets were supposed to seat. To fix this I came up with a simple solution that worked rather well.

On my lathe I turned down a bolt that had a wide shoulder on it. I made the shank of the bolt (green arrow) the same diameter as the opening for the jet in the carb. Just enough clearance so I could spin it around with no play. Then I turned own the shoulder (red arrow) so it was .030 narrow than the recess in the carb base. After checking to see that it fit well I put a little valve grinding compound on it. With a long extension and a socket to fit my custom tool I spent about 5 minutes lapping the seats on the bowl. Afterwards it looked like a freshly machines surface with no pits and only removed a minimal amount of material in the process. With a new set of red fiber washers it does not leak at all. In my haste to test it I forgot to take a picture of the finished part.

The thought of taking the carb to a shop for someone to experiment with or worse yet send it somewhere scared the hell out me. Hoping someone can solve the same issue with this simple fix.

It’s a common problem, and often people over tighten the jets to try and stop the leak, cracking the bowl of a very difficult to find carburetor. If the face of the bowl is warped, you will find the top is also usually not flat either. Your tool for the fix looks good, and just be careful not to over tighten the jets!
