just purchased a 1932 model 54 Pierce Arrow convertible engine idles very smoothly but once when one revs it to about 1500 to 2000rpm no load engine makes loud clatter, restoration company (used by prior owner ) set the tappets but said some of the followers didn’t rotate properly . and flats \ grooves in them are causing noise does this sound correct ? if so where is a good source for the tappet blocks ? Another source told me the 1932 model 54 had hydraulic lifters any input is welcome
Hi Bruce,
1932 Pierces did not have hydraulic lifters. 1933 was the first year.
Clatter could come from several sources. High pitch – piston pins, medium pitch – lifter clearance, low pitch – rods, etc.
Cheers,
Bob
