Very cool. I like the rear window that goes up and down. Please measure the wheel base, as they made these car in 139 and 144. If you find cars like this back east, they are half gone from rust. Welcome to the club. So to confirm it’s a 1937 1702. Best of luck. Ed Minnie.
In the I just gotta know what city / state did you find this thing. While it’s easy to have a sedan to be lost to time, a V-12 coupe of any year not known to any of the club members is unusual. I bet there were a few old timers thinking they would get first shot at it. Does anybody know this car? Ed
Ed,
The car was in a very seedy part of Los Angeles, California near what is commonly known as South Central. I am pretty sure the wheelbase is 139″ but will measure tomorrow when I go over to my storage building to work on it.

Steve,
We talked, briefly, at my Hershey spot. I’m the person that had just finished restoring a 1936 coupe. It’s an 8 cylinder on the 139″ wheelbase. I noted, in one of your posted pictures, that the body ID metal tag was still fastened to the cowl. It is a aluminum strip, about 1/2″ wide and 4″ long. This will tell, the wheelbase, body type, and body number (of this particular body. I believe 15 coupes, both 8 and V-12’s, were built for 1936. Just wondering if they ran these body numbers into the ’37 coupes? Or, started with a #1 for 1937?
If you would like photos of what the interior should look like, give me a holler. I noted your complete compartment behind the front seat is missing. The hole in the center of the dash is where a radio head, or, delete panel would fit.
Good Luck with this project’
Bob
Bob,
Yes, I remember speaking with you about joining the PAS and about the availability of parts. I have the radio delete piece for the dash. What is it that goes in the package tray area behind the seat? If you can send photos, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
Steve
The body tag says 538-C-102. Here is a photo of the center of the dash.
The clock is tough. I sold one 20 years ago. I may have a factory radio on my shelf.
I have a clock in the glove box door but it is white and I believe it is a 1936 clock. I would be interested in the radio. I see in my dash picture that I also need the little covers for the dash lights.
Excellent find and welcome to the club! A great project and a rare car by any definition…congrats!
Can you report the VIN and engine number to confirm model year? The 538 body code prefix is believed to have been used in both 1937 & 38. The 102 indicates that this is the second coupe built as the numbering scheme began with 101 in 1937. This is based on the small amount of data reported for other body types.
The serial number is 3160002 and the engine number is 409018.
It’s a early 37 number. The lowest number known of the series. Number 2 of 61 1702’s built. I still can’t believe that the local PAS members never had a sniff of the car. The owner must have covered it well to be off the radar.
Measuring with a tape measure, the wheelbase appears to be 138″. The previous owner died almost 25 years ago. The car was stored in a shed about 100 feet from a major thoroughfare. The building, which is boarded up, is in plain sight to thousands of motorists every day. The family only just decided to sell. How many 12 cylinder coupes were built in 1937?
It’s not possible to know, my best guess is you car was and is unique. I like 12’s and most of my Pierce cars have been 12’s until recently. The eights while much more common in any body style have their fans who only want eight’s, and don’t care for the 12’s. I think there are good arguments on both sides of the isle on which is a “better”” driver. If we are going to debate which is better we will need a new thread. There is a 36 v12 coupe on the 144 inch wb for sale right now. I’ll try and post a photo. You have a great car there and it deserves to be done right. ed”
There is another late model coup under restoration on the west coast right now. I saw a few photos and they started with much less of a car than you have, It’s an eight. I’m sure someone knows the owner and where it is. They would be a good contact for you. Another photo.
The west coast eight.
