Now that I’m driving the car I’ve been finding things.

The transmission has a throb in the shift lever when in High. It is the same whether in freewheel mode or direct lockup but vanishes when in first or second gear. There is no noise that I can determine but I feel the throb (at engine speed) when I slightly move the shift lever either up or down.

Has anyone run into this? There is no apparent runout of either the driveshaft or the output bearing from the freewheel unit.

    Thanks,

    Bill

Bill, a California member had a similar problem and found that there was a piece of crud (technical term) in the valley (non-technical term) between two teeth. Flushing the transmission while rotating the gears solved the problem. The offending foreign matter may have been a fragment of a previous top cover gasket.

I was thinking a cluster gear with issues……..pits or missing tooth.

    Ed,

If it only happens in high gear isn’t the cluster gear out of the picture?

I drove it yesterday and need to post a slight correction. I feel the throb when I rest my hand on the shift knob and put pressure away from the dashboard. If I move the lever TOWARD the dashboard I don’t feel it.

Apply bungee cord to pull lever forward…or the period correct solution would use baling wire.

Another update. If I’m driving along in high and I declutch it vanishes. Let the clutch out and it’s back.

    Hi Bill.

The Second Gear has to turn on the mainsheet when the trans is in 3rd or direct gear.

The Second Gear has a bushing as it’s bearing on the mainsheet. With your trans having been stored very low, this

gear and bushing were likely dry for a long time.

In a trans I worked on, this bushing and oil-clearance area were filled with dry, gummy gear oil,

The gummy gear-grease caused a ‘soft-seizure of the gear on the mainsheet. It would grab then release when I would turn the input shaft by hand, with the trans in direct.

The gear has only a few holes in the ‘valley’ of a few gear teeth, allowing gear lube to work it’s way to the bushing.

Using penetrants, solvents etc, I tried to wash out the old gummy gear-grease. I was partially successful, but when I had to address another issue with the trans I took the second gear off the shaft and cleaned the rest of the gummy grease off the bushing and the inside of the gear.

So: Bill, I’d remove the floorboards, remove he shifter-handle tower and trans top. I’d take a close look at the lube-holes in the 2nd Gear. clean them, and face ATF through the holes to hopefully clean out or soften the old grease.

Then drive the car without the floorboards to see if the ‘throb’ has been reduced or eliminated.

It is not a bad idea to drain and very thoroughly inspect and clean the inside of the trans and refill or flush and refill. I’d use 20wt or 30wt engine oil to flush, with a few miles of driving to circulate it before draining.

    Greg
