Some of this you may have seen previously, 9+ minutes of video WITH sound taken at Bonneville titled “Penzoil at Bonneville Salt Flats 1932.” One or more Pierce sedans, along with a Model A Ford, are also seen in this YouTube video.

Thanks,Stuart.I hadn’t seen this version.The superior P.A. times
compared to the slower Bugatti and Delage made me more impressed.
The Hawaiian torches used to light the course at night were a little
unnerving.I’d love to know more about the lighting system he used to
drive 124 MPH in the dark. The front axel worked very well and the
camera shots at over 100 MPH must have been high tech in ’32.
If my memory serves me correctly, Tony has experience on a closed course speed run in a Pierce Arrow. And as I remember it was a PAS annual meet. I seem to remember the look on his face was either joy or terror; maybe both. Ed
OK, so which one was he riding with? You or Jon?
Bill
It wasn’t my face that should have been studied. Ed’s eyes were glazed
over and he had a fiendish look.He just wasn’t listening to my pleas
about my Grandkids needing me.I remember questioning in my head, whether
collector car tires were constructed with throwing a 6,500 lb V12 into
a hard turn at 70+,in mind. The 2 other earlier Pierces we were racing,
had alot more power than I expected. Two laps around Watkins Glen and no
brakes left over…go figure.I’m glad I brought an extra change of
underwear.
Great picture, remember the guy in the rumble seat of Eddies 32 coup? I think that’s him with a yellow shirt.
Talk about over driving your headlights!
Running 120mph at night with those old headlights had to be frightening.
And I couldn’t believe how close some of the people would stand to where the car flew by them.
I, too, was impressed to see a Peirce post faster speeds than a Bugatti.
That wasn’t Tony in the 32 rumble seat. Tony had on a white shirt that day and he was in the blue car with Ed. I don’t recall just who was in the rumble seat.
Bill
Hi Bill, I was in the green car with John C. The fella in the rumble seat was Paul Jabcob’s help truck driver. He is was quiet after it was all done…
Sorry for the delay, I was down at Amelia Island…. A GREAT meet. I think that speed run on the track running three wide into the first turn was my most memorable car experience I have ever had. I was thinking how ironic….. I can crash my best car I own into another one of my car…… sure would have been interesting filling out the accident report for my insurance company….. “I got cut off in the first turn when we went three wide into the switch backs….”” CLAIM DENIED.”
Our motto in New England…… “Drive them like you stole them..”” Ed”
There is a very good DVD on one of the Ab Jenkins Salt Flats runs made from an original movie. It is availalbe from PAS member Bill Weikert. See Parts & Services under Misc.
