I think it’s time to find that member who owns a 1931 barn find, stored since 1932, that has never been apart. Surely there must be a few of those, don’t you think? Seriously, determining the proper set up of these systems is a matter of safety. I’m grateful to all the contributors of this discussion for their generous input, I’m sure we’ll figure it out.
Once we do, where is a source for these old style replacement springs?

I expect that you could find anything you want spring-wise at McMaster Carr.
Not only do they offer a Zillion types of springs, but they offer similar length springs with different spring-rates.
