I have a 1927 model 36. Is any clutch maintenance needed?

    Thanks

    Hi Ralph,

These multi-disk clutches require little maintenance. The throw-out bearing needs to be lubricated. With the floor boards removed, you will see a cover on the top of the clutch housing. Open this cover and you will see a grease fitting. Give it a couple of good shots. The throw out bearing is a double row ball bearing. If you should ever have to replace this bearing, it is available as a sealed bearing which does away with the need to grease it with a gun.

Using the crank, turn the engine until a spring loaded ball oiler appears. Give this a few drops of SAE 30 non-detergent. If you have other questions, give me a call at 503-363-5700.

A little hurmor: When the engine was out of my Series 33, I decided to have the clutch rebuilt. As it was placed on the counter at the clutch shop, the counterman asked, “What model John Deere is this for?”””
