    Does someone know if the 1923 Sedan being auctioned is too tall to fit in a garage with a standard 7 foot door opening? The car looks to be rather tall.

    Also does anyone know the mechanical condition? Has it been on recent tours?

    This is the late John Porbeck’s car. We had it in the Pierce-Arrow Museum for some time before and after the 2012 Annual Meet. We actually pulled it up the ramp of my trailer that has an 80 inch door to see if it was possible, but no way. They are tall, but I’m sure someone can give the actual height for you.

    This is a beautiful car with a top quality now older restoration. It hasn’t been toured much if any in recent years and generally little since restoration by Ron Blissit.

    John’s girth was a real issue with this car, but he always had a beaming smile when he was looking at it. I did too! John had picked up some nice P-A’s, but this is the one that I admired most.

    I’d love to have this great example of the dual-valve sedan era in the Pierce-Arrow Museum whether donated or on loan. I’d be bidding on it myself if I had the cash and could also afford the divorce attorney. This will be a great buy for the right person.

    I know John hadn’t driven it much and was having problems with the vacuum system back in 2012. I’d suggest checking with John Gibson, but I’d expect the usual gas related components will need work before doing any touring. I hope this beauty finds a good home within the Society.

    I sure do miss my dear friend John Porbeck.

    Measured John’s vehicle today and the height is 82-83 inches. Would be a very tight fit for a 7 foot door.

    Thank you for taking the time to measure. I have a tract home one garage door provides a true 7 foot opening, the double door does not. Guess I will need to find a model 36 , presumed lower .

    Hello James,

    You could do what I have done for my Pierce in my Trailer with the door only 68 inches.

    I let the air out of the tires and stood on the running boards to get it in through

    the door.

    OR, as when I finally was able last January to acquire my 1918 48 touring (92″ tall with top up, and that top will STAY up), make Other Arrangements:

    1. Traded a space in one of my garages with a good friend Packard collector for one in his garage with 9.5-foot doors–1.5 miles away, AND

    2. Had to buy another, taller, enclosed trailer–used of course

    First things first–the cars, that is!

    BEWARE: a door opening of 84″ or 86″ will NOT provide clearance for a car that measures 82″, unless the car is a coupe, or a very short ‘club sedan’..

    The issue is the sloped floor of the trailer, known as a ‘beavertail’ on the trailer. This ‘beavertail’ lowers the floor at the door opening, but the floor rises for the next 3′-6″ to 4′ into the trailer.

    So, a big sedan, with the top extending several feet to the rear of the centerline of the rear axle will have the rear several feet of the top rise several inches as the rear tires climb the ‘beavertail’ ramp. The rear of the body will not have cleared the back of the trailer, and the rear of the top will contact the coil spring mechanism at the top of the door opening, as the whole rear of the car rises with the rising floor of the trailer.

    If the car is a coupe or a short bodied Club sedan, or club brougham, then the rear edge of the top is either forward of the center of the rear axle, or over or just a few inches behind the axle centerline.

    A Series 36 and a Series 33 are probably going to measure very close to the same height from the ground to the rear of the body’s top.
