Hi Everyone,
The second Pierce toolkit wrench I would like information on is the water pump wrench for my 1931. My water pump has an approximate (tight) 1 and 1/4 inch nut.
The smaller of the two stamped steel wrenches shown has a 1 and 1/16 inch opening, has Pierce script and FAIRMOUNT CLEVELAND on the wrench.
The larger wrench has a 1 and 5/16 inch opening and is not marked Pierce or FAIRMOUNT, but obviously fits the water pump nut.
Interesting enough, both of these wrenches came from the same original Pierce script tool bag.
Am I to assume that the water pump wrench should have the Pierce script and FAIRMOUNT markings?
Is the smaller wrench for an earlier Pierce water pump? I can’t help but wonder if Pierce had a couple of water pump nuts they used in the early eight cylinder years.
Does anybody have a 1 and 5/16 inch wrench with Pierce script and the FAIRMOUNT stamp?
Thanks,
John DIllman
John,
The 1 1/16 wrench is for ’29. The ’31 nuts are bigger and would require a different wrench. I have an original ’29 wrench that’s marked Pierce and Fairmount, but I haven’t run across a marked larger size.
Bill
Bill,
Thanks for the information. That might explain why a marked smaller wrench and an unmarked larger wrench were both in the same original toolkit pouch.
If anyone has the larger marked wrench, please let me know. It would be nice to know if a marked example exists.
Bill, can you shed some light on the lug wrench question?
Thanks,
John
Hello John,
A lot of the wrenches in the tool bags in our cars were stamped with the >Pierce> logo. But my no means were ALL the tools stamped with the logo. Many of the tool bags did not say pierce on the bag. Most series 80 and 81 cars had a tool roll bag with leather straps for each of the tools, but the bag had a Fairmont triangle sewn on label.
I have several original engine crank handles for various Pierce cars.. none have a Pierce stamp on them. Plenty of the handled sockets you described in your other tool question did not have a stamped logo.
The series80 cars came with a hub puller to remove the rear drum and hub from the axle.. I’ve never seen one with a stamped logo.. but I’m sure there are some out there.
Many of the small distributor wrenches were not marked,
I’d find the tools you need to complete your tool bag, using the correct tool maker. Then keep trying to find the tool with a stamped logo. Maybe you will be able to find them all with a logo,
Good luck!!
Greg
Hi Greg,
Thanks for the input. I agree with you, not all of the tools were marked. I know in the case of the 1931 tools, the jack was by another maker (buckeye No. 1) and not identified as Pierce, the grease gun was by Alemite and not marked Pierce, the jack handle is not marked and the hand crank is not marked. The 1931 water pump wrench may also now fall in the unmarked category.
As you say, I have a stamped steel wrench that fits, a marked stamped steel one that is very close in size and I will keep my eyes open for a correct sized marked one. FYI, I found a stamped spark plug socket handle, but you are correct in that most were unmarked (the socket was marked).
After seven years of looking, I am down to looking for the correct lug wrench. I thank Paul Jacobs, David Coco, Chris Diekman, Greg Loftness, Karl Krouch, Ed Minnie, a tool collector in the Buffalo area and Ebay. Without those people and resources, I could not have put together an original toolkit in 20 years. Thanks guys!
John,
Sorry, but I can’t offer any additional information on the lug wrench.
Bill
Absolute oversight on my part…
A special thanks to Bill Morris for, at the beginning of my search, providing me with detailed photographs of all of the tools in his toolkit. This was a great help to me, a photograph is truly worth a thousand words!
