This might be a weird question but I’ve wondered about it for a long time. Please don’t take me out to the parking lot and beat me up. . . .
Has anyone ever removed side mounts from a car, to covert the car into a rear mounted spare? I’m one of what seems to be a very tiny minority who really doesn’t like side mounts. I prefer a rear mounted spare which makes the car look so much longer and sleeker. Plus side mounts make it very difficult to do engine work. And I am always tinkering under the hood.
I ask because a long time ago a PAS friend had a Model C (1930?) Sedan which I was interested in but didn’t buy for various reasons. I liked the car because it had wood wheels and a rear mounted spare tire. When I saw the car for sale again some years later, someone had added side mounts — converted the car from rear spare into dual side mounts, much to my dismay.
So I wondered, has anyone ever done it the other way — side mounts to rear spare? Yes, I know that with a bottomless checkbook anything is possible, but has anyone done it? Is it really hard to do?
Yes, been done many times, in both directions, but it’s usually five to one from rear to dual mounts. You need fenders, brackets, and hardware. It’s not too difficult if you get all parts lined up ahead of time. There is currently a car under restoration that was converted from dual spares, but I don’t want to put the owner, it can be his choice to make it public if he wishes.
