I have found the Tapered Thrust Bearings are destroyed on my steering shaft. I have contacted a few bearing suppliers and since they are tapered it appears they will be hard to find.
Any idea on a supplier?
The steering box is shown on page 28 of the parts manual and looks similar to the Series 36 though with many internal differences, including the worm. The thrust bearings are shown pictorially with no associated part number. You will need to match up the old one.
The latest issue of Hemmings lists 2 sources under Trucks & Commercial Parts section. They are Olcar Bearing at 910-693-3324 and South Shore Bearing at 877-768-8427.
I have had great luck with Olcar.
Thanks, I will contact them.
Charles, It sure looks like the replacement bearing kits we sell for 1929-30 Gimmer boxes. Please measure one of the rollers, if it .250, then check bolt hole and width, We may be able to sell you 2 of them. After a railroad crossing sent one set of rollers and the white metal race to the bottom of the box years ago we have come up with a solution. Karl
Karl,
See the attached photo for details and let me know if it will work.
Just in case it is hard to see here is what they are.
Bore Hole Diameter = .669
Housing Thickness = .20
Roller Bearing Diameter = .248
Outer Taper Diameter = 1.71
Inner Taper Diameter = 1.635
Charles, Looks like your truck uses the same bearing as the 1929 and 30 cars, and have the same problems. Two bearings sell for $55 plus shipping, Karl
Here is the bearing we supply with spacer, and 2 hardened washers. Karl
Karl,
Once again you are a life savor, none of the local shops seemed very interested in helping me find this bearing. I will get a check in the mail asap, $64.00 cover package and shipping? I received the grease boots and will install them this weekend, they are a perfect fit!
It’s great to see remedy in short order on a complicated item like this-Bravo Karl!
Charles, glad to help, $62 should get them to you priority mail. I have installed five sets, and sold many more. I only had one tooth holder fight me. The original milling of the fork was shallow on just one side and required minor grinding to fit one outer washer. Keep in mind the washer does not spin. The original bearing used the housing and tooth as races. The replacement has hardened washers ground to make the .250 total bearing. Also be sure to re-weld the bolt after you install the tooth again. Something else to keep in mind: you can distort the holder and bind the bearings by over torquing the bolt. Call me if you have any questions. Karl
Karl, that sounds good, once I receive it I will see if I have any questions and call if required. I was wondering if there would be a little grinding required. One side of the fork has a little more depth then the other on depth so I may only need to grind one side.
On another note since I am batting 1,000 with you, I am looking for an oil pan drain cock assembly do you have any ideas? Mine was missing and a plug in its place but the high level test cock is in good shape.
Charles, Check with the Series 80 guys for the drain cock, the 8cyl cars do not have this plug. I do not have any for sale . Karl
Charles, Got your monies. Bearings are in the mail. Let me know if you have any problems installing them. Karl
Thanks Karl I look forward to receiving it and will let you know if I have any questions installing it.
