The sanding begins!! Wood wood wood!

Hi everyone!

Im back with a small update. The team has started the sanding process of the wood frame. I am still in shock on how solid everything is. It looks like somewhere in the cars life someone replaced a small 3 inch piece in the rear pasenger frame. Possibly the factory? Who knows. Other than that it is in fantastic shape.

The grain in the wood is fantastic. Is this cherry?? Even as bare wood, it is coming to life. It is so much fun to watch the 29′ take shape. The boys at the shop have nick named it the “hot rod”.

Some will find this gross, others humorous. When the car was taken apart, a small mouse was found barried deep inside the upholstry.(only one) It had been there for a long long long time. The little guy was flat as a board. Deon, the master guard dog of the car grabbed it, dubbed it “Pierce” the mascot of the restoration. Pierce sits on wall, directing the entire restoration. I think I will have to put him in a plexy block. I can not throw him away now!!! Im sure Pierce would love to go to Michigan!!! lolol Pic of Pierce below.

I wanted to take a second to thank Dave Murray. He has been a wonderful help in finding some odd ball parts during this journey. This week, I needed to find the rubber door stops for the 29. Off the top of his head, “Metro Rubber, 32 Buick”. WOW! Who would have known.

In my 1930 “C” sedan there was a small break in the body structure and a couple of holes under the back seat and above the gas tank. I had to replace a 30″ section, and used oak. Don’t tell the present owner.

I highly recommend that you treat all wood surfaces with a clear penetrating epoxy sealer (CPES) prior to repainting. It seals, strengthens,and primes the wood. I use Restor-It brand, which is available from boat repair facilities. It is about the viscosity of water and soaks into old, dry wood readily.

I agree on the wood sealing, then it’ll be good for another 80 years. I really like West System, but I’m sure others do the job well also.

West System is also a marine epoxy.

All of the marine epoxy products must survive the world’s most harsh environment, the OCEAN.

You will be fine with whatever brand you choose to use.

The sanding contiues. The Northern White Ash truly looks beautiful with all that grain. It is is coming to life. Every inche of wood and metal is taken down by hand. They have not used anything else but labor on the body. The fenders and misc parts are the only thing that were sandblasted. You can see the wood coming clean as well raw metal. All by hand.
