Anyone have a rebuilt water pump for a 29? I can have mine rebuilt for $350. Just thought I would check.
It should be rebuilt with NEW bearings……it had bushings from the factory. Also, a new stainless shaft should be made. It needs to be checked for cracks, as they often don’t appear untill after the rebuild. Also, the 29 pumps are known to have end play as well as rusting through problems. 350.00 sounds light to do a pump right today. End play should be set up before the shaft is finished. Ed.
You must have ‘sealed bearings’ installed. $350 is about right.
And it should not use a packing for a seal on the shaft. Be sure they use a modern rubber lip seal. I still think 350 is low. Bearings, shaft, seal, sandblasting, crack check, machine for bearings and seal, fill pits in pump, prime, paint, new hardware, chrome for the cup, ect…..money doesn’t go far today.
I had the water pump for my 1923 series 33 rebuilt professionally with sealed ball bearings. After about five years they rusted out. I had it redone by a local machinist with bushings just like the original, and a new shaft. No problems since. teak a drop and the packing never has to be tightened.
About twenty years ago I put braided Teflon packing in my 1929 Model 133. It has never leaked a drop, and doesn’t need tightening. I drive it at least once a month.
The key point is that the bushings and the shaft need to fit correctly.
