Water pump end play

I’ve got the water pump from my ’26 Series 80 disassembled, and I’m wondering about the end play in the pump shaft. Without any packing in the gland, I can move the shaft and impeller back and forth about 0.030″ (sliding parallel to the axis of the shaft). Is that normal? I feel like there ought to be a thrust washer, or something similar, between the cover and the face of the impeller, but I don’t see one in the parts book illustration, and it don’t see how it would mount. Maybe this is just how it’s supposed to be?
