Vehicle History

This bus was originally built for the Fred Harvey company. Harvey Coach #221.

From Arrow 2002-02:

Pierce-Arrow Sightseeing Coaches –
In the mid-1930’s, Pierce-Arrow introduced a line of sightseeing
vehicles, designated “Model 204”. (presumably, this was the wheelbase.)
Three varieties were listed: “H”, “J-l” and “J-2”. Little information remains
on what the differences were between the models. From the few photos we
have seen, there may have been solid-roof and roll-back roof examples, plus
coaches with and without built-in rear luggage compartments. The vehicles
were considered 1936 models, but all had 1935 styling, body work, instrument
panels and basic chassis with the 8-eylinder engine and Stewart-
Warner power brakes.
Production figures are not available, but apparently about 40 of
these Pierces were built. They were used mostly by Yosemite Park, the
Broadmoor Hotel, and tour companies in the Grand Canyon (Fred Harvey Company). A few were
used on inter-eity routes on the East Coast. To see excellent pictures of
these as used at Yosemite Park. refer to John Meyers’ book, “The Forest
Domain of the Pierce-Arrow”.
PAS member Wayne Mikosz sent in a batch of photos of this decrepit
survivor, three pictures from which are shown here. Nothing remains of the original interior seating,
and we understand the engine and transmission are also among the missing.
