The hydraulic lifters in my 1937 Seagrave with a 500 V-12 Engine start to tap when the engine warms up. What is there I can do to quiet them down? I use straight 30 wt oil.
Thanks
Tim
I assume that the engine has good oil pressure when it is warmed up. For a short fix add one large (or two small) can of STP to the motor oil. This should be done with the engine running and preferably warmed up. Beyond this, it will require removing the lifters and determining their condition. Start with the STP and let us know if that cures the problem. If not, then we’ll go into detail on servicing the lifters.

Thanks for the tip. I will do the STP in a week or two and get back to you.

I have found that the gasket between the lifter assembly and the cylinder block can shrink, this opens the pressure/supply hole to the drain cavity in the lifter block.
This allows some of the oil intended to go through the lifter bores and lifters to go directly to the drain to the engine sump.
I made new gaskets, this quieted my ’33 engine’s lifters.

Olson’s Gaskets has the gaskets. See Parts & Services Directory for contact information.
