Bill, I have a 31 Model 42 Phaeton and I did remove the gas tank to remove the shroud.  I found that there were nails where the heads only held the shroud in place. I don’t know if that is standard or not.  I suppose if one pulled hard enough one could slide the shroud out but then you would have the problem of getting the shroud back in place and properly captured when you reinstalled it.  Removing the gas tank is a bit tricky but not hard.  You can unbolt the straps which hold the tank in place allowing the tank to sag a bit. That will allow you to get to the vent hose which I needed to remove to maneuver things around the exhaust. Once the vent hose is off, there are “pins” that hold the other ends of the straps in place.  Those can be pulled out and the tank will drop straight down.

    Good luck,

    Kirby

Very nice, and congratulations to those responsible.  We are fortunate to have a club so committed to our cars.  Thank you!

I hope you enjoy the process as much as I have.  As another member told me, “it’s not one big job, but many little jobs.”  Good luck and hope to see progress pictures.

I thought I would post some pics of progress on my 31 Model 42. Have completed cleaning up the undercarriage and painted the frame. What a messy job. Have parts out for chrome (am going to chrome the shutters 😀), more parts out for powder coating and am beginning the process to paint. Except for the tack rail for the convertible top, I cannot believe how good of condition the wood is in

Hi Greg, thanks for your comment.  I did not add the footie, I did know about that but chose not to, as  I knew the car would be going down soon for a restoration.  I did run evaporust which did more clean up.  Cooling improved dramatically after I did this.  When I did take the car down for the restoration, and removed the water jacket, I saw what others had indicated I would see……lots of particulate scale. After that will certainly use the footie when I reassemble.

David,  thank you for your suggestions!  Especially on the hinges as I may have done just what you cautioned against.

Bill, your post made me laugh, you have an eagle eye spotting the Morgan.

I really appreciate all inputs and suggestions.

Don, welcome to Pierce Arrows.  I too purchased a 1931 Model 42 Phaeton in May and have been on a steep learning curve.  While my car was not sitting in a museum, it received very little driving since 1994, so I have been wringing it out.  Have it now to a point that I would be very comfortable taking it on a tour. There are others here that are much more qualified then I to give technical advice, but I would certainly be willing to help you in any way I can.  Best of luck to you.
