Just my two cents…………
I always liked and ran Lester tires…….the last set I bought was in 1992……for a bunch of reasons.
Most of what is commented above by several people , I tend to agree with most of it.
There have been EPIC changes in the old car tire industry the last ten years……..none of them good.
Quality, availability, service, warrantees, every thing that was once taken for granted is out the window. I probably have bought and installed more tires than just about any person or shop in the last five years when it comes to the BIG pre war CCCA type classic cars, as all of our cars but one have dual side mounts, and many of our cars have two sets of wheels………its a long story why but lets leave that one alone. I think the only good information is word of mouth from the last 18 months or less……..anything older will tend to not necessarily apply……GOOD or BAD.
From my opinion, over the last 18 months, every tire I have installed is a Firestone. Yup, we have had too many issues, but for look, fit, finish, wear, and warranty service…….they have been the best.
SPECIAL NOTE – Most tire are made in batches of 50 to 200, thus I have bought no less than five sets of 700-19 Double Wide White Firestones over almost 40 months…….they are ALL from the same batch gentlemen. They are sitting around for awhile before you install them…..fact of life………
Alos…..there is currently another tube shortage again………how bad? Enough that a few of us are getting together an order of 250 tubes so we can get them before November.
I spoke to Grant today, fortunately he is a well respected attorney……….a very nice gentleman, and with a bit of luck, we can all help him find another Pierce Arrow.
Above shoul read 750-17, NOT 759-17. Sorry.
I have installed nine sets of Firestone tires in the last three years, from 17 to 20 inch, I have had two new defects before installing and three defects after installing. All the cars has six tires, about 10 percent failure/defect rate. They made good on all of them. One was two years old with less than 100 miles on it, easy to get a credit, pain in the axx to change. Lesters are currently out of production. Everything else makes noise going down the road. So we’re still installing Firestone’s, put a set on yesterday 759-17 on the ground, 650-17 under the covers.
Depends…..on tire brand you are replacing them with, 700×17 will fit with no air in them,,,,,,,,tightly. I installed 650×17 on a car under covers yesterday…….all Firestone brand. PS- Firestone is currently out of the 700-17 tires.
So very sorry. Grant, I know an EXPERT not far from you who you should contact for insurance/ valuation/ appraisal. Fantastic references and beyond approach. If you would like info, call me 413-530-5712
I have no financial or economic interest with they individual. Just good friends.
Sounds fantastic……..as I expected!
1936 1602 Conv Coupe.
Maybe the gears are left and right, front and rear? It was 25 years ago or more that I replaced mine from Irv. I think they would fit the later series cars………..
From memory, they are left and right, front and rear, and I THINK they fit 1934 to 1938.
Sorry about the typos, phone typing and big fingers!
I last saw the 38 about seven years ago.
I have seen the 38 in person. It is beyond terrible and has vertually no useable parts on it. I can’t remember the details but there he engine numbers MAY have been rusted away or it was an incorrect engine, or something of the sort. I wouldn’t take it for free. It was that bad. It is a 1938
I would love to see the car at the show. Looks like with some elbow grease it might be a good driver.
Call me and I’ll give you an opinion in private. I don’t want to irritate a potential new member. I thought the travel trailer was a bargin. One must also remember that you have to look at the value of the dollar compared to other things available and the price range. So it’s not just what the Pierce arrow will sell for, it’s what can you get for that same amount of money that may be a better car or a better model. I think things are going to revert back to like they were in the 70s and 80s where the open cars will be changing hands quite easily but the four-door sedan‘s are going to be a very hard sell. Very hard.
Lots of good advice here. I’ve bought and sold more than 25 Pierce Arrow Cars over the years. Including some of the best and rarest models. There is a virtually identical car near me that I refused for less than half of the 46K, and I have been keeping an eye on it for years. Sedans usually only do well at auctions when there are five or six bidders on the same car. Recently sold a very similar car that was totally sorted with a rebuilt engine and it took me three years to find a purchaser that wasn’t offering bottom feeder money. Not too long ago an exceptionally nice restored example of the same vintage had a hard time selling for approximately 65,000 and that’s a totally restored beautiful car. The market is in flux and one really never knows what a car will change hands for. I am certain if that were my automobile I would never ever send it to that auction. Best of luck. Ed
The trailer was a good value, I already have a restored Model B, and didn’t want another. I would have appraised it at 60k. Ed
I agree with David’s comments 100 percent. I will add that that auction is a poor venue for that car…….and will likely make it bring a lower price than some others. Best of luck with the car….
I was in the museum yesterday, car could be a nice driver. The back uhpolstery is very nice and well done but incorrect material……looks odd, but very presentable. Overall a decent older amateur restoration. Could be lots of fun……the mirrors are ten times worse in person. They made four holes in each door!
Curtiss……..any V-12 that is not running should be approached with extreme caution. Looks like it has new heads on the engine. While it may be easy to make a running car out of it, I would say a very, very low number not running. All the others are almost scrap, and not even complete parts cars. The 1602 is basically a gamble……do you feel lucky? Or are you willing to walk away from it if the engine is bad? Roll the dice…….it’s also possible that for little effort it will run and drive.
Best of luck on the cars…..
