Yes, it was 2006, I drove it on the Red field and parked in a PAS spot, sold it to a guy from Pennsylvania for just about identical money to Ebay bid…..have pictures of car as found that the new owner might enjoy…
thanks for personal replies, and a special thanks to a member who just sent me a plaque out of the blue, a thank you note is on the way..still looking for some..if anyone runs across them let me know…thanks – David
I sent a picture to Bernie and he didn’t have a record of Georgia Pierce, I’ll work on contacting the relatives, thanks for the idea! dc
One needs to go back in time, to a Pierce dealership, and you go in to test drive a 1935 Pierce, and you want to try the 12….you get in the car, and it just barely turns over, and after you drive it and try to start it while hot, it’s hard to start.
You wouldn’t buy it, would you, particularly a car that’s thousands more than a basic automobile.
Point is, of course, that being a V-12 doesn’t mean it’s going to be hard to start. There’s something else wrong, whether it’s a condenser, wrong battery cables, dragging starter, worn starter gears….there’s something else wrong.
If these cars had been hard to start when new, sales would sure have suffered (more than they did due to depression!)
I’ve sent a picture of the item to Bernie, let’s see if he knows…..I have no clue who she was, but it’s interesting that there’s another Pierce item out there with her name on it….I’ve tried to post a picture of this thing, if anyone knows anything about it please advise…best…. David
No, it’s a jewelry type pendant, it’s in the shape of the Pierce coat of arms with motto below it, and a flat raised place across the middle with her name engraved, whole piece is about 1.5 inches tall, with raised details (such as birds) in gold or gold plated.
What’s the clock, is it floating around?
Will do, thanks!
Well, am sure you know this, but have to state the obvious. In fact, my son calls me Captain Obvious, Defender of the Already Known.
Battery cables. Are they the large, fat, 6 volt rated? So many times, someone goes and buys battery cables, and the 12 volt cables are not sized correctly to carry amps needed, it’s seem more when engines are hot.
You should have battery cables about the thickness of your thumb, nice, fat cables. If not, the problems you mention will follow.
If you have the fat cables, then you need to look at starter and ring gear….
I agree, if you look at the shape of the metal above the dashboard, it doesn’t look correct for an open car, on my 43 phaeton it is curved and wraps around sides. Also, I was looking for a picture showing the cowl vent, didn’t open cars have two vents and closed cars have one?
The chrome plates above front of door, and on panel right behind door, appear to be something added, possibly when coupe top removed?
The older gentleman in the skybox bought the Silver Arrow, I don’t recognize him. The underbidder was Gordon Apker.
If the restoration was “fresh”, then it’s been updated since Easter of 2011, which is the last time I saw the car….dc
Doug, that’s a funny story, and one of the reasons that there are always two places you can get free drinks. One’s any gambling casino, and the other is a high dollar car auction….and the purpose of both is to keep those smart brain cells at bay, and let the stupid brain cells lead the pack…..
I’ve visited this car a couple of times in the Blackhawk collection, and if one wants a car restored to the standards of the 21st century, this is not the car….while still beautiful, it is a very tired older restoration…when I saw it last it even had a cracked door window….the funny thing to me is that I’d heard the Blackhawk had been asking 1.5 million for it and couldn’t find a buyer….anyone know who bought it?
Memory is telling me that the plates are about 1/16 inch apart, and the spacer is actually a hard rubber or other hard material, the vibration is taken up in the “suspended” metal plates. I believe there are four plates and three spacers, but that’s from memory and surely someone can look at their car and tell you.
Daryl, I’d have to agree with you…can’t imagine an archer being so special, even gold plated, to bring that kind of dollars…
Hi Ronald- if you run into a dead end on the hood handle, I could remove one of mine and have a replacement cast….let me know David Coco Winchester Va.
My vote is that the firewall should be body color. When my 31 Pierce was restored in 1960, the gentleman who restored it was a stickler for being authentic, and the original paint was on the car before restoration, and he painted the firewall body color. I’d be willing to bet the black paint was done later on your car. This is just my opinion, though….
I realize it wasn’t a joke, but it was hard to pass up a little humor at Tesla’s expense…..didn’t mean to offend….dc
I believe that’s the speedometer that doesn’t have to be hooked up to anything to work…….
Seriously, there is a story of Tesla using a Pierce as a test mule for his electrical theories, seems I read he converted a Pierce to electric drive, and of a box with a rod he’d insert and the car would run on that…
Maybe he had custom instruments and one found it’s way into another car?
Hi Walt, glad to hear you still have custody of the Silver Arrow. You acquiring that car enabled me to acquire a 1937 Cord phaeton, which went back to Auburn last month for the first time in a long time! Sure liked the Silver Arrow, though.
Diesel is what I hear, particularly in newer trucks. GMC quit putting the big gas engine in 3/4 ton trucks in 2006, so after that date, diesel is your only choice. Still don’t understand a 3/4 ton truck with what is basically a small block engine that they’ve built since then, but federal regulations on mileage killed that concept….
Pat Mr. Sterling on the fender and say hi for me, like my Cord but miss the mechanical excellence of the V-12….and have a great memory of buying the SA from Moline while everyone else was at a Pierce meet back in the 1980’s!!! And driving it through the rolling hills of Texas, to Pate Museum, at a Pierce meet way back when…
I’d agree, Ed, it looked pretty crude……but there has to be a story there….
