I just looked at the photos on the link above, it wouldn’t come up for me before. Lots wrong with the car. From the looks of the car any work done to it was poor quality at best. That just indicates every thing on the car will probably need work. 40k was all the money…….. it will take lots of time and money to clean it up.

Scott, the answer is all of the above. I have seen investors pay world record prices for a Pierce Arrow, as well as dealers. Most of the dealers don’t do too well. Most auction cars have LOTS wrong with them. I see fake cars (closed to open) cars with fire truck engines, wrong parts, hidden problems, the list is endless. Most good Pierce Cars change hands between PAS members. I have bought cars at auctions, it is a risk that you assume. Once and a while a geed deal can be had…….but I think there is more down side than up to an auction car.

I recently consulted on a different open car than the one being spoken of above. I asked the owner if he new the car was a “real” factory open Pierce. He asked if I thought the car had “issues”. I said yes I think it has “issues” but could determine if it were correct by looking at several items and parts of the car. He elected for me not to look, as he was not sure if it was “correct or incorrect”. The car has been sold. I don’t think the new owner is aware of the car’s history. ALWAYS consult an expert.

Bob is correct. Thr 32 engine uses a diffrent crank, and a bunch of other stuff. Why not just get a correct block? Give John Cislak a call, he may take the other blocks in trade. He has a bunch of motors at the shop. It’s worth a call. In an open Pierce using the wrong engine will cost you 15 to 25 percent off the top when the car is finished. Details matter on the high end cars. Also, shouldn’t the school be teaching students do it the right way the first time? Just because something is difficult does not mean you shouldn’t try and make it right. Too many good cars have major defects, I see it ALL the time. I look at lots of cars for people, a 30 PA open car with the wrong engine would make me pass on the car. Just my 2 cents.

Anyone who wishes to purchase an open Pierce Arrow car would do good for himself to get an expert to inspect all aspects of the automobile.

Val Blazer is the A****** who is stealing everyone’s money. He has a relative who is a district court judge who keeps back the lawsuits. There have been several diffrent names used but the result is all the same. People who are out lots of money. He stuck it to car, truck, and even tractor collectors. He attended the 2003 PAS meet looking to get seed money for lots of projects that never got done. It’s always best to post questions here when dealing with people who are not club members. Ed

in reply to: 1933 Cam Bearings #399039

You can use babbit or bronze. You need a good line bore set up to do them correctly. The modern set ups used at the engine builders today WILL NOT WORK. The cam bearing is where most engines drop oil pressure. It’s common to see a car with a rebuilt engine and poor oil pressure due to the fact that no one wanted to deal with the cam bearings. It takes a lot of time to do them correctly. Babbit shells must be spun, installed, and then cut to the correct measurments. Bronze is the same, I installed them in my 36 V12 and set them up tight. I have lots of oil pressure even on a 90 degree day agter hours of driving. Use a Kwick-Way bar if you can find one. Good luck, Ed

Jim, you can buy new sending units made with brass gears.

in reply to: Wood frame: Stain or paint. #398994

I use a seaaler on the wood first, then paint it black. Top bows seem to be both painted or natural depending on the car. It seem to me I see more natural finish than painted. Some cars have the header painted body color. The 32 open car I am currently helping with was painted windshield header and natural on the rest. I like the look of the wood myself.

Pierce Arrow painted their chassis in black gloss.

It’s NOT my car, I just help a friend keep them running and looking good. I am going to put some miles on it next week to be sure it’s reliable. I’m sure I will have an opinion on it after I get 500 miles on it. I must confess I think I will have a BIG smile while driving it. Some time one must compromise one’s standards to help out our fellow man.

Craig…….it’s not on topic for the PAS, but as per your request………

As far as fakes go, there are also lots of fake watch fobs, made in the 50′ and 60’s. I have only seen two real ones, and a bunch of fakes. You see them in Stutz, Packard, and Cadillac also. I have seen the belt buckles years ago, in a display case at Hershey. The were being sold as authentic. Be careful out there!
