  • The time frame would be fine for me, but I would be a little concerned about holiday traffic when touring. Everybody might have the same idea. Not being too familiar with the area, if it doesn’t get too touristy, it would be fine.

This was also my first time at a Pierce Arrow event, being a new member. I don’t know whether to be more flabbergasted by the cars or the membership! I never anticipated running into such nice, welcoming people. I also can’t get over the generosity of the people letting me ride in their Pierces, and even letting me drive a few! I definitely will be going to the meeting in St. Louis next year, and attending these events whenever possible. I simply couldn’t get over the people, and one thing that will stay in my mind is that when we were out touring on Saturday, and while making an ice cream stop, one of the members was having engine trouble. You could just see the others, as they turned into the lot, looking over, and chomping at the bit to come over and help the stalled member out. The way these people share information and help each other out is absolutely amazing! I’ve also decided to join the museum, as I really like being part of this group!

Well, I hate to say this but this worked out to my advantage! I was able to meet Wilma and Bill out at the Oak Brook show, and they were as gracious as they have been on line! I even got to sit in Wilma’s 31 sedan! I had to learn how to get my big feet in the car, but once I was it in, the car really seemed to “fit.”” I have to get one of these!”

Look forward to meeting you! I’ll be there around 1230 or so, after church.

Sorry to hear about your problems. By chance are you going to be at the auto show in Oak Brook this weekend? I would look forward to meeting you.

I am literally overwhelmed at the response to my inquiry. I really appreciate all of the help. While this car is not exactly the Pierce I would want to own, it’s close enough where I would be happy with it, but on the other hand, if it would require too much work to be feasible for me I can hold off. I live in Chicago, so the ride out to Volo is only about an hour, but you all have given me a good idea of what to look for. I’ve been following Pierces in Hemmings for quite a few years, and have seen prices all over the place. This car seems to have been out a Volo for a while now. I’ll keep you abreast of what is going on. Thanks again, all.

No, I see exactly what you mean. Same thing holds true for a car like a Rolls or Bentley. You can buy a 1990s vintage of either of these cars for a pretty reasonable price. If the car has been maintained well, the components are well engineered and will give great service. If the car hasn’t been maintained, it will cost you a fortune to fix it. That’s why I am interested in the history of some of these vehicles. While I don’t think I am ready to buy anything tomorrow, I want to make sure that I get the right car, and one that I can live with.

Just out of curiosity, how much would an overhaul of an engine like that run? Just for future reference.

Thanks John, I have to share a really funny Pierce Arrow story. Due to a reorganization, I now work for a center based out of Buffalo, in the Larkin Building, right down the street from the Pierce Arrow Museum. I had never had a chance to visit the museum until last September due to travel times and the museum’s hours. Since this center is based in Buffalo, I jokingly told them that since we are now Buffalo based, they should get me a Pierce Arrow work car, and could save some money by looking around in government warehouses and getting me J. Edgar Hoover’s old limo. I never had a clue that the shot up hulk of the car was right down the street! The whole office cracked up when I sent them pics of the car. Guess I’ll have to buy my own now!

I’m a new member, and hopefully, upon my retirement in a few years, will be buying my first Pierce. I really appreciate the info that is available here on this site, and hope it will keep me from getting burned on buying a vehicle. There is a 1934 Pierce 12 for sale right now at Volo, IL, but at the moment I would have no where to put it! For the next couple of years I just want to keep my eye on things and hopefully get a winner. Thanks for all of the info.
