Jak, I have been told by others of good results……I will try them soon. Happy 4th of July down under!
I just checked the on line alignment site, confirmed rear wheel drive cars, bias tires, and non power steering box run negative castor to return the wheel to center after a turn. While slightly less stable at high speed, how often do you drive your car over 65 mph. Early and mid 60’s GM cars ran one degree negative untill power steering came in. I invite anyone to try and drive my 32 or 36 and see how they drive. Truth be told I have never driven better steering cars than mine, try mine and compare! Ed
Running negative castor will return the wheel to the center after a turn, unless my memory is fading, it negative, I’ll have to look it up.
These cars need lots of negative castor. I have aligned hundreds and hundreds of cars and trucks at my modern shop. A shake under load will be worn components. Could be shackles, drag arm, bad ball and sockets on spindle, kick shackle on frame, steering box, or as I came across this last winter, wrong components in the car.
He asked about shaking while using the brakes, not at speed. If it only happened under brake load it is not alignment.
Sounds like steering linkage or steering box. Does a 30 have a kick shackle?
I will check with him later today.
Richard, call Rand Bradstreet in Ohio. The best carb guy in the world for off the wall stuff. He is listed in the CCCA directory. I may know a guy who may have one but he would want HUGE money for it. Ed
I think it’s brothers. I have used both, but I like Rhode Island better. I have installed 5 of them so far. I have one on the shelf right now for my 1931 Series 42. Ed
Stu…..car looks great! Seems like you just got the car yesterday. I found the lost photos and emails on my old computer last week. It sure is a nice automobile. Ed.
I use Rhode Island, they are very nice kits.
John, Bob Sands would know……and he has a car that’s 147 if I remember right. Ed
The convayor belt won’t settle. My car has been done 20 years and 15 thousand miles. It scored 99.5 points at CCCA 5 years ago and the door and body alignment is perfect. The frame on your car will flex much more than most people realize. Dont make the door gaps too tight or they will flex and pinch.
Dave, time sure goes by fast, I first considered joining the PAS in 1981 at age 15 when I met Larry Gould while working on my 1931 Cadillac Coupe and he gave me a membership application. I didn’t even have a drivers license yet. I finally joined in the fall of 1987 at age 21…..I was always the young kid at all the meets for years on the east coast. 27 years later I am no longer the youngest regular member, but after attending so many national meets (20 of them now) and Hershey I think I qualify as an old timer. Larry is still an active member of the New England Region and is now in his early 90’s. It’s been a great adventure and I have met so many great car people from all over the US. The only thing I would change is I should have joined in 1981! Of all the car clubs I have been a member of the PAS is the BEST. Hope to see you all in Rhode Island. Ed
It will be cheaper to buy a good used unit than to wind and armature and probably the field coils also. There are lots of good rebuilders, but only a few companies that will hand wind and armature or field coils. Almost all of them sub out that work. Last time I was told 1200.00 to rewind the armature on a late series car. Look for a good used unit, you will find one. The car will drive for hours no problem on a good battery. Don’t be afraid to use the car even if it is not charging. No reason to lose the car for the summer. Ed.
I can’t imagine why this post should be deleted. It’s directly related to PA’s and a new owner. I would welcome the new owners to the club but they have been members for quite a while, so I will say congratulations on the purchase of a very nice automobile! Hope to see it on the road at a meet in the future. My best, Ed
Use thick conveyor belt. It comes in assorted thickness. Preload it for a while if possible. It will cut down on the adjustments. Good luck, Ed
Send a email to Greg Long. He is currently the most active series 80 & 81 member. If there is a source he will know it. Ed
Sometimes if you adjust the third brush 1/2 turn and put it back it will start to charge. The 36 uses a cut out & regulator in one unit. They usually work well and are hard to find if you damage it. You can also put modern electronics in them and they will be good for ever.
Sell me the car for 15 cents on the dollar. Interestingly, my 32 did the same thing this year. It took 3 miles before it started to charge. Check battery voltage…..it should be 6.1 or so.
